ICC U19 World Cup: West Indies coach defends 'Mankad' against Zimbabwe

New Delhi: Days after the controversial run-out by West Indies bowler Keemo Paul, the team's coach Dwain Gill defended the decision of 'Mankad' saying it is well within the rules.

West Indies beat Zimbabwe by two runs on Tuesday to enter the quarter-final of the ICC U19 World Cup when Keemo Paul ran Richard Ngarava out without entering his delivery stride, dashing the African minnows' hopes of progressing.

West Indies face Pakistan on Monday in the quarters and coach Gill went on to defend the decision.

"I mean, a law is a law, right?" Gill said.

Gill found support from Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. He stated that if it is in the rule book then it is about personal decision making.

"If it is in the rule book it is all about personal decision making," Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe said.

Earlier in the match, the umpires, who initially did not give the decision, asked the West Indies players if they wanted to uphold the appeal and after receiving confirmation, the matter was referred to the third umpire which confirmed that Ngarava's bat was not behind the line.

The decision to run-out Ngarava in that manner had sparked a furore on social media.
