England vs Pakistan: 2nd Test, Day 2 — As it happened...

Pakistan collapsed to 57 for four in reply to England`s first innings 589 for eight declared for a deficit of 532 runs at stumps on the second day of the second Test at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Chris Woakes took three for 18 in six overs before Shan Masood (30 not out) and Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (one not out) got through to the close.

Earlier, Joe Root made 254 as he became just the fourth England batsman after Denis Compton (278, Nottingham 1954) Ted Dexter (205, Karachi 1962) and current captain Alastair Cook (263, Abu Dhabi 2015) to score a double century against Pakistan in a Test match.

Three Pakistan bowlers conceded more than 100 runs each with leg-spinner Yasir Shah taking one for 213 in 54 overs.

Pakistan lead the four-match series 1-0 after their 75-run win in the first Test at Lord`s last week.

PAKISTAN, 1st INNINGS; ENGLAND 589/8d

OVER 24 || SCORE 57/4 (Masood 30; Misbah 1)

Pakistan will now need much more push-ups to survive this Test match. Responding to England's 589/8, they have now lost four batsmen under 100 runs.

Wickets of veteran Younis Khan and Rahat Ali at the closing minutes of the day hit hard them.

Chris Woakes, who got the last wicket of the day, that of Ali's, had a good day in office. Scored 58 quick runs then scalped three wickets. Yes, the day however belonged to Joe Root.

Pakistan still trail by 532 runs with 6 wickets remaining in the 1st innings.

OVER 20 || SCORE 44/2 (Masood 23; Y Khan 0)

Chris Woakes took another wicket, this time sending back Azhar Ali. Caught and ball.

OVER 15 || SCORE 32/1 (Masood 12; Ali 0)

Responding to England's mammoth 589/8d, Pakistan have  lost their one of their openers Mohammad Hafeez early, in the 13th over. Just before Drinks. Timing!

ENGLAND 1st INNINGS

OVER 152.2 || SCORE 589/8d (Ali 2)

Finally, England declared their innings with some 23 overs play still left in the second day.

Brilliant effort from Joe Root, who became just the sixth batsman in 132 years to score a Test double century at Old Trafford as he made 254, to help England post 589/8d.

Earlier, skipper Alastair Cook provided a solid foundation, scoring his 29th Test ton. Other notable contributors are Chirs Woakes and Jonny Bairstow, both made 58.

For Pakistan, Wahab Riaz took three wickets. Mohammad Amir and Rahat Ali shared two each, while Yasir Shah got  a scalp as the visitors toiled hard.

OVER 145 || SCORE 531/6 (Root 225; Bairstow 31)

Joe Root is going strong. He and Jonny Bairstow have posted a 60-run stand for the seventh wicket as England crossed 500-run mark.

With Tea likely in the next few minutes, England might soon declared, to give their bowlers a go at Pakistan batsmen.

OVER 132 || SCORE 482/6 (Stokes 203; Bairstow 9)

Day's second wicket to Wahab Riaz, but it seemed Ben Stokes has done his job. His knock of 34 runs in 51 balls allowed Ben Stokes to take to complete a double hundred, even as England move closer to 500-run mark.

That happened off the first ball of the 131st over. Stokes called for DRS but, Hot Spot confirmed a nick. Good catch behind the wickets.

Jonny Bairstow is Root's new companion in the centre.

And no signs of declaration from Alastai Cook.

Over 117 | SCORE 427/5 (Root 185; Stokes 6)

Pakistan managed to get a wicket but the onslaught from Joe Root continued on second day as England push towards a big first innings total.

Yasir Shah, who was the hero of the first Test with a ten-wicket haul, finally got a wicket in Manchester. His caught & bowl effort ended a 100-run fifth wicket stand between Root and Chris Woakes.

WICKET: Chris Woakes c & b Yasir Shah 58 (104b)

That happened in the 114th over, off the fourth delivery.

Thus arrived Ben Stokes in the centre, and England avoided any further slump as the teams go to Lunch.

OVER 103 | SCORE 364/4

This fifth wicket partnership between Root and Woakes crossed the fifty-run mark. It has been a very satisfying first hour for England.

Day 1 round up

Joe Root`s unbeaten 141 was the centrepiece of England`s commanding 314 for four on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford on Friday.

England captain Alastair Cook, who won the toss on a good pitch and in sunny conditions ideal for batting, made 105 and shared a second-wicket stand of 185 with Root.

Having twice got himself out during England`s 75-run defeat by Pakistan in the first of a four-Test series at Lord`s last week, a determined Root did not give a chance in just over six hours at the crease.

Pakistan`s left-arm pace trio of Mohammad Amir, Rahat Ali and Wahab Riaz became increasingly threatening as the skies clouded over late on.

Amir took two for 63 and Rahat two for 69, with both men bowling 20 overs on Friday.

But star leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who took a man-of-the-match winning 10 wickets at Lord`s, returned figures of none for 111 in 31 overs.
