India vs South Africa, 4th Test: Two contrasting innings from Rahane, Amla and other statistical highlights

New Delhi: Statistical highlights of day four of the fourth Test between India and South Africa here on Sunday:

Ajinkya Rahane is the first Indian batsman to record a hundred in each innings of a Test match vs South Africa. In all, he is the fifth Indian batsman to post a century in each innings of a Test match, joining Sunil Gavaskar (3 times) - 124 & 220 vs W.Indies at Port of Spain in 1970-71; 111 & 137 vs Pakistan at Karachi in 1978-79 and 107 & 182 not out vs W.Indies at Kolkata in 1978-79; Rahul Dravid (twice) 190 & 103* vs N.Zealand at Hamilton in 1998-99 and 110 & 135 vs Pakistan at Kolkata in 2004-05; Vijay Hazare - 116 & 145 vs Australia at Adelaide in 1947-48, Virat Kohli - 115 & 141 vs Australia at Adelaide in 2014-15 and Ajinkya Rahane - 127 & 100* vs S.Africa at Delhi in 2015-16

Rahane hit four sixes during his 127 in the first innings and three in the course of his unbeaten 100 in the second to become the second Indian batsman after Harbhajan Singh to record atleast three sixes in each innings of a Test match.

Harbhajan Singh had posted three each during his 69 off 97 balls and 115 off 193 balls vs New Zealand at Ahmedabad in November 2010.

Seven sixes posted by Rahane in the Delhi Test is the joint second highest by an Indian batsman in a Test match behind the eight by Navjot Singh Sidhu during his innings of 124 vs Sri Lanka at Lucknow in January 1994. Besides Rahane and Sidhu, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan have hit seven sixes in a Test match.

Rahane has totalled 227 runs (127 + 100 not out) - the highest tally in a Test match by him, eclipsing the 195 (147 + 48) vs Australia at Melbourne in December 2014.

With 266 runs at an average of 53.20, Rahane is the leading run-getter on either side in the series. He is the only one to register two hundreds in the present series. No other batsman has recorded even one. He became the first Indian batsman to post three Test centuries this year.

Rahane has registered six centuries in Tests - one each vs Australia, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand and two vs South Africa.

Virat Kohli (2994 runs at an average of 44.02 in 41 Tests, including 11 hundreds and 12 fifties) needs six runs to complete his 3000 runs in Tests. With his splendid 88, Kohli is averaging 47.20 vs South Africa in Tests - his aggregate being 472 in ten innings, including a hundred and two fifties.

In the course of his captain's knock, Kohli has completed his 1,000 runs in Tests in India - his aggregate being 1059 (ave.46.04), including three centuries and seven fifties, in 17 Tests.

Kohli has managed 896 runs at an average of 52.70, including four centuries and two fifties - the second highest tally by an Indian skipper after ten Tests behind Sunil Gavaskar's 1031 (ave.79.31) including five hundreds and three fifties.

Amla's strike rate of 11.11 is the lowest by any batsman in a Test innings of 200 or more balls.
