India vs England, 2nd Test, Day 2 — As it happened...

Visakhapatnam: India, despite losing quick wickets, came back strongly to take complete control of the match on the second day of the second Test at Visakhapatnam on Friday.

At stumps, England were 103/5 after 49 overs' play. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow were unbeaten on 12 runs each.

Tomorrow, third day's play will start with India still leading by 352 runs in the first innings.

Kohli could add only 16 runs to his overnight score of 151, and at one point, India were struggling to reach 400-run mark. But a brilliant 58 from Ravinchadran Ashwin and 35 from debutant Jayant Yadav helped India post a good total of 455.

In response, England lost both the openers in quick succession, Alastair Cook to Mohammed Shami, and Haseeb Hameed to a run-out. Joe Root fought back briefly before becoming Ashwin's first scalp. Ben Duckett followed soon, becoming Ashwin's second victim. Yadav then removed Moeen Ali for his first Test wicket.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow fought hard to produce a 23-run stand and put an stop to the march of wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin bowled the day's last over, and leaked five runs. Jonny Bairstow, after blocking the first four balls, hit the penultimate delivery for a four past mid-wicket. Another single and five runs from it.

In the last ten overs, England have scored 18 runs but most importantly put an stop to the march of wickets with Ben Stokes and Bairstow playing sensibly.

Finally some runs for England. Four runs off the 48th over, bowled by Jayant Yadav. The over started with a double, with Ben Stokes playing through cover. Two more singles from the over.

In the previous over. Stokes took a single off the Mohammed Sami over. It was the first run in three overs.

And England are two runs shy of 100.

Then Mohammed Shami is back, and soon slip cordon active for India. Ben Stokes negotiated the India pacer, fending off all six deliveries for a maiden over.

In the last over, Stokes survived a close call. His bat just missed the ball, and India's review was not unwarranted. Wriddhiman Saha was super confident, so thus the bowler. Ravindra Jadeja thought he had Stokes, but the replay showed the bat hitting the boots. Two runs from the over.

Change of heart from Ben Stokes, and a first boundary since the the 25th. It came off the penultimate delivery off the 43rd over, bowled by Jayant Yadav.

Successive maiden overs as Ravidra Jadeja tied down Jonny Bairstow. But it was Jadeja's second maiden from his 13 overs' spell so far.

England still trail India's first innings total by 368 with five wickets remaining.

Jayant Yadav continued with his fifth over. Unlucky. Clipped the off stump bail with a floater off the very first ball, which beat Ben Stokes on the back foot, but the wicket remained unmoved. And it was followed up with lots of questions, to Stokes. A maiden.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin got a deserved break, and came Ravindra Jadeja. Two runs from it.

England have lost the plot in Vizag. They have lost two wickets for 13 runs in the last ten overs. And they are still 370 runs behind India's 455.

For India, spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav have produced the goods. With more than three days' play left in the match, Virat Kohli & Co will go for the kill.

Joe Root, what a mess. Came down the pitch and tried to loft one straight, but a miscue hit meant Umesh Yadav at long-off taking a clean catch. Now, England are in serious trouble.

Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his first wicket of the match with a beauty. Bowled a clueless Ben Duckett.

TEA: Hameed and Root have ensured that visitors don't lose any more wickets in this session. Shami and Yadav were brilliant with the new ball, something which would please Virat Kohli. Jadeja and Ashwin, in all likelihood, will attack from both ends in the next session. India are in control of the game now.

Indian seamers, especially Mohammed Shami, still giving the Englishman trouble with the new ball. Hameed prefers to take cautious approach this early in the match while Joe Root started to play his shots in the last couple of overs.

Mohammed Shami got India off to a brilliant start as he clean bowled Alastair Cook off a stunning ball. Shami pitched a fuller ball outside the off-stump and as Cook let it go, it nipped back to uroot his off-stump which broke into two halves. Sensational delivery it was! Joe Root comes early to the crease.

India have been bowled out for 455 runs. Adil Rashid picked the remaining two wickets as the tail-enders were having a got at him. England have done well to bowl India out today. It remains to be seen whether Indian spinners can rediscover their mojo after a poor outing at Rajkot.

Ashwin's brilliant innings came to an end when he edged a bouncer from Ben Stokes behind the wicket. Ashwin and Yadav added valuable 64 runs for the eighth wicket. Umesh Yadav is the new man in. It remains to be seen whether India can reach the 500-run mark, with Jayant batting well at the crease.

LUNCH: 29 runs were bowled in the session, India scored 98 runs and lost three wickets. Moeen Ali brought England back in the match by picking three wickets in quick succession. After India lost the wicket of Jadeja at 363, Ashwin and Jadeja shifted moment back in India's favour with a brilliant unbeaten 52-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Debutant Jayant Yadav has played some fine strokes so far and he is supporting Ashwin very well at the crease. Ashwin has the potential to play big innings (he hit two centuries in tour of West Indies) and needs someone for company at the other end. These two have added unbeaten 35 runs for the eighth-wicket partnership.

Moeen Ali is ripping through the Indian lower-order. After removing the skipper, Ali trapped Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja in front of the wicket. Against Saha, umpire Dharamsena took quite some time before raising his finger. The decision was reviewed but it couldn't save the wicketkeeper batsman. On the contrary, Jadeja could have been saved had he reviewed the decision. Plenty of action with the DRS. Jayant Yadav, the debutant is the new man in. Big opportunity for him to prove his credentials with the bat.

Kohli missed out on his third double ton of the year as he dismissed Virat Kohli on 167. Just on the previous ball, Kohli was dropped by Ben Stokes at first slip. But as he looked to attack the next ball, it once again took an edge and went to Stokes, who took an excellent catch to get the big fish.

Both Kohli and Ashwin have had no problems whatsoever since the beginning of this session. Kohli especially is getting in his groove, which could be bad news for Cook and his men. Time for a change in bowling as both Anderson and Broad have failed to make an impact so far.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad started the proceedings for England in the morning session. Ashwin scored a brilliant boundary through covers off Anderson in the first over of the day. Ashwin, by no means, is a tail-ender and England would be looking for an early breakthrough to disrupt India's momentum.

What to expect on Day 2:

With a determined Kohli ready to bat for a long time, India are likely to post a big first innings total in Vizag. And for India to post a first innings total in excess of 500, Kohli will need more than a steady company.

England, meanwhile, will hope for an improve showing from their bowlers, specially the spinners after toiling hard on day 1. James Anderson, once again, is likely to lead the charge.

Day 1 recap:

Skipper Virat Kohli batted like a man possessed, slamming an unbeaten 151 in company of another centurion Cheteshwar Pujara to steer India to a commendable 317 for four.

In his 50th Test, Kohli led from the front by striking a classy 14th hundred and also added 226 runs for the third wicket with Pujara (119), who has now reached three-figure mark in his last three matches.

Kohli also claimed moral victory over his old nemesis Jimmy Anderson (3/44), who was the best English bowler on view.

At stumps, Ravichandran Ashwin was in company of his skipper and India's healthy 3.5 run-rate would also be a cause of concern for the Englishmen.

Kohli's legend at Vizag also reached enormous proportions today as he struck his third international century from four ODIs and one Test as his scores before this match at the venue were 118, 117, 99, 65 (in ODIs).
