ICC World T20: Virender Sehwag questions MS Dhoni's captaincy in semi-final defeat to West Indies

New Delhi: Former India opener, Virender Sehwag questioned Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy after India lost to West Indies in their 2016 ICC World Twenty20 semi-final match at Mumbai on Thursday.

Talking to Cricbuzz, the 37-year-old wondered what could have been happened if India's premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was allowed to complete his quota of four overs.

“I don’t know why Ashwin bowled only two overs. He could have bowled his four overs as Jadeja (Ravindra) gave away 48 runs and Pandya gave more than 40 runs in his 4 overs," Sehwag told.

Ashwin bowled only two overs, conceding 20 runs even as his partner Ravindra Jadeja completed his qouta of four overs, conceding 48 runs. Both the spinners went wicketless.

"Ashwin is our main bowler and he is the best in the world and thus, I feel somehow MS Dhoni’s captaincy was not good as seen in this game," Viru said.

Surprisingly, Dhoni went with Virat Kohli as India needed to defend seven runs in the last over to force a bowled out. But West Indies reached the target with two balls to spare.

Sehwag, however, stressed on the importance of winning the toss.

“The toss was extremely crucial for both the teams. Half of the game became easy for the West Indies when they won the toss. Everybody was aware that the dew would come in later and since it was the Wankhede Stadium, the pitch was good for batting. Since it is a small ground, 180-190 is easily chaseable”, he added.
