England vs Sri Lanka: Alastair Cook breaks Sachin Tendulkar's record, becomes youngest batsman to score 10, 000 Test runs

New Delhi: English Test skipper Alastair Cook on Monday became the youngest batsman to score 10,000 Test runs.

On Day 4 of the second Test match vs Sri Lanka, Cook hit pacer Nuwan Pradeep for a boundary to reach the milestone.

With the boundary, Cook - 31 years 157 days today – broke Sachin Tendulkar's previous record. The batting maestro was 31 years, 10 months and 20 days old when he scored his 10,000th run in 2005.

Cook also became the 12th man to join the most exclusive club in Test cricket.

Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, Sunil Gavaskar, Jacques Kallis, Allan Border, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Steve Waugh are the other batsmen to have reached the milestone.

Ahead of the series, Cook needed just 36 runs to achieve the milestone.

However, he had to wait for quite some time as he could score just 16 runs in the first Test and followed it with a 15-run knock in the first innings of the second Test.

England are hosting Sri Lanka for a three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and lone Twenty20.
