New Delhi: West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has denied allegations that he exposed himself to a woman in Sydney during the 2015 World Cup.
The 36-year-old opener, who is playing in the Big Bash League, has been in a storm over his recent inappropriate remarks to Mel McLaughlin, a reporter with the official broadcaster of the T20 league.
After the incident, which got widespread reportage around the world thanks to his batting prowess and uber lifestyle, an Australian woman approached Fairfax Media claiming that Gayle indecently exposed himself to her during the World Cup.
The flamboyant left-handed batsman, however, denied the report.
Gayle's agent Simon Auteri, in a report in ESPNcricinfo, threatens Fairfax of legal action for labelling false accusation.
"Chris denies the allegations published by Fairfax Media earlier today. It is important that anyone seeking to make false accusations against Chris be aware that Chris and his management will be considering all rights and legal options available. There will be no further comment from Chris or his management at this stage," Auteri was quoted as saying.
Incidentally, Gayle had until recently been a guest columnist with Fairfax.
The woman, who was working with the West Indies team during the ICC's flagship event in Sydney, said in the report that she found Gayle in the room with one more player... Gayle was wrapped in a towel, which she says he pulled down to partially expose his genitals to her while saying to her: “Are you looking for this?”
The report also claimed that the West Indies manager Richie Richardson had subsequently sent a communique to all team members about the need to be more respectful to women at the World Cup.
In between, Channel 10 reporter McLaughlin has accepted Gayle's apology for the inappropriate remarks.
