BAI moves SC after PBL faces legal hurdle: Report

New Delhi: The Premier Badminton League is facing some trouble regarding the sporting event with the Meghalaya High Court ordering a stay on the tournament scheduled to take place from January 2 to 17 in 2016.

According to a report in the Times of India, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Tuesday rushed to the Supreme Court seeking immediate stay on the HC order.

It also asked the SC to allow it to hold the tournament which will feature six franchises and several international players.

Reports claim that senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for the association, pleaded before a bench of Justices M Y Eqbal and C Nagappan seeking stay on the HC order. He stated that the HC had no jurisdiction to allow the petition and the court erred in staying the tournament.

A case has been posted for Wednesday after the bench heard the matter.

18 matches are to be held in the PBL, including two semifinals and the final which is scheduled to be held on January 17.

According to sources, the HC had passed an order on a petition filed by Sobhagaya Media Private Limited challenging the validity of the franchisees' meet held in New Delhi on December 6.

Claiming that it is a franchisee of the PBL, it hadn't been allowed to participate in the meeting as the decision pertaining to tournament was made.
