Navratri 2017: Day 2 - Worship Maa Brahmacharini for virtue and peace

Navratri – or the nine auspicious nights dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms is one of the most auspicious period in the Hindu calendar. Each night of the Navaratri is associated with one of the forms of Durga that have distinct significances. Day 2 is devoted to Goddess Brahmacharini.

Dressed in white, Maa Brahmacharini is the unmarried form of Sati, King Daksha’s daughter, who was later married to Lord Shiva. It is believed that she underwent rigorous penance to please Lord Shiva and convince him to get married to her. Since she lived a life of a Brahmacharini by fasting for years and withstanding extreme weather conditions, she has tremendous powers.

She is depicted holding a Japa Mala in the right hand and a Kamandala in the left hand.

Since she is governed by Mangal, the controller of all fortunes, her devotees worship her on the second day of Navaratri to seek her blessings for peace, virtue and prosperity.

ॐ देवी ब्रह्मचारिण्यै नमः॥

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू।
