New Delhi: Space enthusiasts across the globe were on Monday treated to a spectacular celestial show when the Earth's satellite – the moon – made its closest approach in nearly 70 years

The phenomenon called a 'supermoon' occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest (perigee) to Earth.

Even as social media erupts with stunning images of the supermoon, NASA has released a stunning photo of the moon and the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. In the image, the supermoon is seen as it sets over the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on Monday, Novvember 14, 2016 in Washington.

Early Monday morning, the moon was the closest it has been to Earth since 1948 and it appeared 30 percent brighter and 14 percent bigger than the average monthly full moon.

Earthlings will not see another supermoon like this until 2034.
