New Delhi: The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft recently captured brilliant images of a huge outburst on comet 67P.
According to Space.com, the outburst occurred on February 19, when Rosetta probe was about 22 miles away from the comet.
"Over the last year, Rosetta has shown that, although activity can be prolonged, when it comes to outbursts, the timing is highly unpredictable, so catching an event like this was pure luck," Matt Taylor, ESA's Rosetta project scientist, said in a statement.
In this rare close-up of eruption, the probe captures a series of dramatic outburst phenomena along with the spikes in the amount of ultraviolet radiation reflected by the comet. As per ESA scientists, the outburst of dust may have been triggered by a landslide on the icy body.
