COVID-19 scare: China's Wuhan to test all residents as Delta variant rages

As the COVID-19 Delta variant rages in China, the Wuhan authorities have said that they will be testing their 12 million residents for the coronavirus.

Wuhan, where coronavirus reportedly first emerged in late 2019, had reported no local coronavirus cases since mid-May 2020 but authorities confirmed three Delta variant cases on Monday (August 2, 2021).

The COVID-19 Delta strain has reportedly also been recorded in cities like Beijing in the past couple of weeks.

Wuhan official Li Qiang said that to ensure that everyone in the city is safe, city-wide nucleic acid testing will be quickly launched for all people to fully screen out positive results and asymptomatic infections.

Several cities in southern China and a few in the north including Beijing have recorded COVID-19 cases and authorities have conducted mass testing and sealed off some higher-risk neighbourhoods.

The delta variant of COVID-19 was first detected in India and is now dominant across the globe. It is significantly more contagious than the original variant of COVID-19 and is said that can be passed on even by vaccinated people.
