What Is Uber Shikara? Asia’s First Water Transport Services Launched In Kashmir- In Pics

Uber has launched its first water transport service in India, allowing users to book shikara rides on Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake through its app. Named Uber Shikara, this service is the first of its kind in Asia and is inspired by similar water transport services in European cities like Venice.

 

 In the initial phase, seven shikaras have been added to the fleet, with plans to expand based on demand. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha praised the initiative, highlighting how technology can help preserve and promote cultural heritage. 

 

The shikara is a traditional wooden boat commonly found on Dal Lake and other water bodies in Srinagar. Available in various sizes, it is primarily used for transportation and typically seats six people, with the boatman positioned at the back. Shikaras are a significant part of Kashmir's cultural heritage.

 

Uber Shikara rides are available for a 1-hour duration between 10 am and 5 pm, with a maximum of 4 passengers. Bookings for Uber Shikara can be made up to 15 days in advance, with a minimum notice of 12 hours.

 

Dal Lake, a large freshwater body, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. As the second-largest lake in Jammu and Kashmir, it is often called the "Jewel of Srinagar." The lake plays a vital role in tourism, recreation, and commercial activities.

 

The president of the Shikara Owners Association mentioned that there are approximately 4,000 shikaras in Dal Lake. He expressed optimism that Uber would bring more shikara partners on board in the future, which would further enhance the service's impact on local tourism.

 

Uber, which had already launched its cab services in Srinagar, now aims to transform the way tourists explore the captivating waters of Dal Lake with the introduction of Uber Shikara.
