JAKARTA: In its best performance ever since 1951, the Indian athletics contingent won two gold on August 20, taking the overall medal to 59 medals which include 13 Gold, 21 Silver and 25 Bronze. In a historic performance, middle-distance runner Jinson Johnson won the Gold in the Men’s 1500m event to become the first Indian, after 56 years, to win the yellow metal in Asian Games track competition. Johnson clocked 3:44.72sec to claim the top honours ahead of Iran's Amir Moradi, who turned in a timing of 3:45.62sec, his season's best effort. The women's 4x400 relay team – Hima Das, M R Poovamma, Sarita Gayakwad and V K Bismaya – won the gold on the last day of competitions. The Indian women's quartet of Hima Das, M R Poovamma, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Velluva Koroth ran 3 minute and 28.72 seconds to claim the gold. India has been winning the gold in this event since 2002 Asian Games. The individual 400m silver winner Hima, who began first, provided a handsome lead to Poovamma, who maintained it and passed on the baton to Sarita, who remained strong in her lap and Vismaya comfortably finished the race. (PTI Photo)

Defending champions India were knocked out of the Asian Games gold medal contention after Malaysians handed India a heartbreaking 6-7 loss in sudden death after an exhausting shoot-off. India will now play eight-time champions Pakistan in the bronze medal play-off. Pakistan lost 0-1 to Japan in the other semifinals.
