Manmohan Singh’s Three Daughters: Achievers In History, Law, And Literature - No Politician

Manmohan Singh's Daughters and Family: Manmohan Singh (92), the former Prime Minister and the mastermind behind India’s economic reforms, was cremated on Saturday in Delhi. The funeral took place at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat, where his daughter performed the last rites in a solemn ceremony. State honors were accorded to the leader who shaped modern India’s economic trajectory. 

Prominent figures attended to pay their respects. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi were among the dignitaries present. Their presence highlighted Singh’s lasting impact on Indian politics and global diplomacy. 

Manmohan Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters, Upinder, Daman, and Amrit. Gursharan Kaur, a professor and renowned kirtan singer, stood by his side throughout his remarkable journey. The daughters, each accomplished in their fields, carry forward his legacy in diverse ways. 

Upinder Singh, the eldest daughter, is a distinguished historian. Currently serving as Dean of Faculty at Ashoka University, she has authored several acclaimed books on Indian history. Her scholarly contributions, such as A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India, have earned her the Infosys Prize in Social Sciences. Upinder is married to Vijay Tankha, a renowned author known for his extensive work on Ancient Greek Philosophy.

Daman Singh, the second daughter, is a writer known for her works exploring personal and societal themes. Her book Strictly Personal offers an intimate biography of her parents, while The Last Frontier delves into the relationship between people and forests in Mizoram. She is married to Ashok Patnaik, a former IPS officer and intelligence official. Daman’s husband, Ashok Patnaik, is an IPS officer who previously served as the CEO of India’s National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID). 

Amrit Singh, the youngest, is an international human rights lawyer. Based in the United States, she teaches law at Stanford and advocates for global justice. Her academic journey spans prestigious institutions like Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge, reflecting her commitment to excellence. 

As India bid farewell to one of its most revered statesmen, the family’s strength and achievements shone through the grief. Each member has carved a unique path, embodying values of service and knowledge. 

Manmohan Singh’s contributions to India’s economic landscape will remain unmatched. His family’s role in various fields ensures his legacy lives on, inspiring generations to come.
