Kerala rains havoc: 21 dead in rain-related incidents, armed forces join rescue operations

The continuous heavy rainfall in Kerala caused flash floods and landslides in several parts of the state leading to the death of 21 people. All the three armed forces along with NDRF are deployed for the rescue mission in the southern state.

Personnel from the three defence forces -the Army, Navy and the Air Force have been pressed into service for rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the state.

Earlier today, Indian Air Force medium-lift helicopters have been inducted for flood relief efforts in districts of Kerala inundated due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, INS Garuda, Kochi Southern Naval Command (SNC) is providing relief material to landslide affected areas in Koottickal, Kottayam, Southern Naval Command.

Earlier today, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a `Yellow Alert` in 11 districts of Kerala for heavy rainfall.The alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alapuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.

The Met department said that a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian sea and adjoining Kerala has become less marked and there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall at many places with only isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala during the next 24 hours and further decrease thereafter.
