Indian Railways making new Pamban Bridge, to connect Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi after 58 years: IN PICS

Indian Railways is adding a new rail link between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi by constructing the Pamban Bridge once again. 

Notably, till December 1964, Dhanushkodi was a popular station, which was directly connected to Mandapam station in Tamil Nadu before Tsunami destroyed the whole bridge, eliminating the only rail link. 

At that time, Dhanushkodi station was an important point of contact between Ceylon in Sri Lanka and Mandapam in India, when a train also used to run under the name of Boat Mail. 

Indian Railways has now shared images highlighting the construction update of the new Bridge, which will cost Rs 700 crore. 

Under the new proposal, there will be 13 kilometers of elevated track from the ground in the line of 18 kilometers. 

During the Tsunami of 1964, hundreds of passengers along with the train staff were killed. Since then, no attention has been paid to reconnecting Dhanushkodi to the rail link. 

 

Geographically, Dhanushkodi is on the tip of Pamban island, separated from the mainland by the Palk Strait in Tamil Nadu.
