As the omicron coronavirus variant pops up in countries all around the world, scientists are anxiously watching a battle play out that could determine the future of the pandemic. Can the latest competitor to the world-dominating delta displace it? Some scientists suggest omicron could emerge the victor. Human rights 'atrocities': US announces diplomatic boycott of 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing
The United States will not send government officials to the 2022 Winter Olympics due to China's human rights "atrocities," the White House said, after Beijing threatened unspecified "countermeasures" against any diplomatic boycott. President Joe Biden said last month that he was considering such a boycott amid criticism of China's human rights record, including what Washington says is genocide against minority Muslims in its western region of Xinjiang.
