7 Unique Wedding Traditions Followed Across India
In India, weddings are celebrated like a Festival which is followed by Unique Wedding Traditions all across the country. Here are some of the wedding traditions which are followed in India:
Kaal Ratri
This unique tradition is followed by Bengali people in which the Bride and Groom have to sleep in different rooms for the first night.
Joota Chupai
This unique tradition is mostly followed in North India, especially in Punjabi people where the bride’s sister and friends hide the shoes of the groom and the groom has to compensate or give ransome to get his shoes back.
Breaking the “Sehra”
This tradition is also followed in North India, mostly among Rajputs in which the Groom breaks his “Sehra” (The flower Veil which covers his face) to depict that his bachelorette days are over and he is ready to begin his new life.
Hide the Thali
This unique tradition is followed in South India where the sister of the Bride hides the Thali in which the Mangalsutra is kept. The groom has to find the Thali to begin other wedding rituals.
Twisting Groom’s Ears
This wedding tradition is followed by the Maharashtrian people in which the brothers of the Bride tag along on the Groom’s ears, depicting the duties and responsibilities of the marriage. This tradition is called “Karya Sampati”.
Kashi Yatra
This unique wedding tradition is followed by the people of South India. In this tradition, the groom pretends to go on a pilgrimage to “Kashi” and renounce worldly pleasures and the bride’s father pretends to persuade the groom to return and marry his daughter.
Antarpat
This unique wedding tradition is followed in Gujarat by Gujarati People where a Silk cloth is placed between the Bride and Groom before exchanging garlands. This silk cloth creates a teasing moment between the bride and groom who tries to get a glimpse of each other.
