Yearender 2018: Bollywood films that became surprise hit
Kedarnath
Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh's daughter, Sara Ali Khan made her Bollywood debut with 'Kedarnath' this year. The film earned over rs 60 crores which is pretty good for a film that marks the lead actress's debut. Sushant Singh Rajput played the male lead opposite Sara and both actors were praised for their performances. The film hit the screens in December this year.
Andhadhun
Ayushmann Khurrana's 'Andhadhun' left the audience stunned and received rave reviews. The film earned over Rs 100 crores internationally and won critical acclaim. 'Andhadhun' told the story of Akash (played by Ayushmann) who unwittingly becomes involved in the murder of a former film actor. The movie also starred Radhika Apte and Tabu in pivotal parts and hit the screens in October this year.
Badhaai Ho
Ayushmann Khurrana was on a roll this year which is why two of his films have made it to this list. The actor made us go rofl in 'Badhaai Ho' and at the same time, made us teary-eyed during some segments. 'Badhaai Ho' hit the screens in October this year and became an instant success, owing to its unique storyline. The family entertainer earned Rs 136 crore at domestic box office and received positive reviews. The quirky drama also starred Sanya Malhotra, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta in pivotal parts and was helmed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma.
Stree
Experimenting with the genre proved to be the winning factor for 'Stree'. The film starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles and went on to become a box office success. Owing to the right amount of horror and humour that it offered, the film received a thumbs up from critics and audience. 'Stree' hit the screens in August this year and earned over Rs 129 crores. The film is helmed by Amar Kaushik.
Raazi
Alia Bhatt's 'Raazi' was one such film that evoked the feeling of nationalism in every heart. The film starred Vicky Kaushal as the male lead opposite Alia and both actors received immense appreciation for their performance. 'Raazi' had a powerful script that left us in tears when the film ended. The film earned over Rs 120 crores and showed Alia in a whole different avatar. Helmed by Meghna Gulzar, the film released in May this year.
Hichki
Rani Mukerji starrer 'Hichki' also proved that when it comes to Bollywood films, content remains the king! With Rani in lead, the film earned over rs 200 crores globally and was one of the most talked-about films this year. The film tells the story of life of Naina Mathur, a school teacher suffering from a rare Tourette Syndrome, who finds acceptance in a bunch of students. Naina and her students, who are also opressed by the society, embark on a mission to show the world that they are no less than anyone else out there. The film released in March.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety
We all saw Kartik Aaryan at his best in 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' that released in February this year. The film starred Kartik, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh in lead roles. College goers thronged theatres on the first day of the show and positive word of mouth made the film enter the Rs 100 crore club. The Luv Ranjan directorial received a thumbs up from the critics as well.
