Vidya Balan as Manjulika in Bhool Bhulaiya provided a bone-chilling experience to the audience. This could be touted as one of Vidya's career-best performance. She played a ghost of a Bengali dancer whose lover was brutally murdered by the king of a palace. The name 'Manjulika' became popular amongst people after Vidya's effortless portrayal of a possessed woman. The film also starred Shiney Ahuja and Akshay Kumar in the lead roles.

Bipasha Basu has had a history with horror movies. Her first ever horror flick Raaz was touted as Bollywood's best attempt at horror movies. Although she wasn't the ghost in the movie, her encounters with the ghost were the most horrific ones. However, Bipasha did play a ghost in Alone, in which she also played a double role. The film also starred her husband Karan Singh Grover, with whom she fell in love on the sets of Alone.
