Oscars 2021: Chloé Zhao, Anthony Hopkins make historic wins at award ceremony!

The 93rd Academy Awards took place on Sunday, April 25 as a virtual ceremony due to the ongoing pandemic. In India, it was live-streamed on Monday, April 26 from 5:30 am - 8:30 am.

 

The star-studded event made history with the first Asian woman to win Best Director, the oldest actor to ever win Best Actor, and the first Korean to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The British actor Anthony Hopkins won the best actor Oscar over the late Chadwick Boseman. Hopkins, 83, became the oldest actor ever to win an Academy Award. He won the award for his performance in the film 'The Father' in which he played the role of a man with dementia.

Hollywood actress Frances McDormand won her third Academy Award at the Oscars 2021 for her role as a widow in the film 'Nomadland'. Actress Frances McDormand had won her first Oscar in 1997 and her second Academy Award in 2018.

Chloé Zhao made history at the Oscars 2021 by becoming the First Asian woman to win the Best Director award. She was given the award for her film 'Nomadland' about a van-dwelling modern-day nomad, which was widely appreciated by critics.

The U.S. recession drama 'Nomadland', about a community of van dwellers, won the Best Picture award at the Oscars 2021. The film is directed by Chinese-born director Chloe Zhao and stars critically acclaimed actress Frances McDormand.

The 2020 Netflix original film ‘My Octopus Teacher’ bagged an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, the film documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster forging a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest.
