Planning To Travel With Your Dog On Indian Railways? Here's How To Do It Right

Indian Railways has made it easier for pet owners to travel with their dogs and cats, especially in AC First Class. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for a hassle-free journey with your pet, including new online booking options for pets and other helpful tips.

Start by booking your train ticket through the official IRCTC website. Make sure to carry a printed copy of your ticket. This will be essential for your journey and help streamline the process. You can now also book your pet’s travel online for AC First Class, which eliminates the need to wait at parcel offices.

 

Before booking, ensure that your dog or cat is fully vaccinated. Carry the vaccination records to prove your pet’s health status. Additionally, you must provide a certificate from a veterinarian that specifies your pet’s breed, color, and gender. These documents are required for booking your pet’s travel.

Bring your dog or cat to the luggage office at least three hours before the train's departure, whether you have an online ticket from IRCTC or a PRS ticket. Here, you'll complete the booking process. Only one pet is allowed per PNR, so plan accordingly.

Pets can travel with their owners in AC First Class if you book an entire 4-berth cabin or a 2-berth coupe under a single PNR. As per India Today report, you must contact the divisional railway manager or general manager’s office to request these cabins, as such requests are prioritized. Be sure to confirm availability before booking.

Pets are only allowed in AC First Class. They are not permitted in other compartments, including AC2 tier, AC3 tier, AC Chair Car, Sleeper Class, or Second-Class. Make sure to reserve your tickets in AC First Class if you plan to travel with your pet.

 

Ensure your pet remains calm and comfortable throughout the journey. If your pet causes disturbances to other passengers, railway staff may ask you to remove it from the compartment. Being mindful of your pet's behavior will help ensure a smooth and pleasant travel experience for everyone.
