Indian men's hockey team were handed a punishing 0-7 loss vs Australia in the final of the Commonwealth Games 2022, meaning they go back home with a silver medal. Their silver medal clinch ensures India's medal tally increases to 61. India have finished with a total of 22 medals at the Commonwealth Games, with 16 silver and 23 bronze. India have finished 4th on the medals tally.
The hockey team had no answer to the skills of the Australian team as they never looked in competition right from the start of the final match. Australia continued to make inroads and had PR Sreejesh, the goalkeeper, not been there, the result could have looked even worse as he made as many as 7 successful stops. India's defence was all over the place in the final and it showed in the final result.
Up against the rampaging Australians, Indians struggled to get their act right in the summit showdown, which turned out to be completely lopsided. Australia were 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, with Ephraums scoring the second goal for the six-time CWG champions. They continued to dominate the game and scored five more goals to extend their domination at the multi-sport sporting extravaganza.
But good news in badminton as shuttlers brought 3 gold medals. First up was PV Sindhu, who beat Canada's Michelle Li in the final of the women's singles to win the first gold in badminton. It was followed by another gold as young Lakshya Sen smashed his way to a win in final vs NG Tze Yong of Malaysia. And then men's doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy clinched the third gold.
India's table tennis legend Sharath Kamal won his third gold in CWG 2022 for India in men's singles. He completed 4 medals in CWG 2022, with one gold in Men's team, one gold in mixed doubles and one today. Not to forget, G Sathiyan who won the bronze in men's singles TT as well.
