New Delhi: Ahead of the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in January this year, the Maharashtra government launched 'MumbaiWifi' facility with aim to empower people digitally.
However, the digital empowerment seems to be taking a stray course.
As per a report in the Hindustan Times, around 10 percent of the “ three lakh people who access Mumbai’s free WiFi services in a day use it to browse pornography”.
Citing state information technology (IT) department statistics, the HT said that an average 30,000 of the three lakh daily WiFi users use it to watch porn.
State IT department's principal secretary VK Gautam told the HT that the department had blocked 38 suspicious websites, however, they keep coming up using different domain names.
The blocked sites have been added to list of websites blocked by the DoT, he added.
Gautam, also said that the number of people watching porn on smartphone was low when compared to user of other internet services providers.
