Berlin: European powerhouse Germany has been at the forefront of empathising with Syrian refugees and welcomed them with open arms, contrary to other countries in Europe which have remained skeptical.

Moved by the gesture of the German government and the country's people, a Syrian man who lives in Berlin decided in August to give something back to the saviour.

Alex Assali has since been serving food to Germany's homeless in an effort to “give something back to German people”, reports The Huffington Post.

As per the report, Assali had fled Syria in 2007 after writing critically on Internet about President Bashar al-Assad. He spent a few years in Libya and then moved to Germany in 2014.

He has been providing free food to the homeless in different parts of Berlin.

One of the places Assali sets up his meal station is outside of the Alexanderplatz station. There, he serves fresh food to some 100 people every Saturday.

Assali’s friend Tabea Bü posted a picture of the Syrian serving food outside Alexanderplatz station, on Facebook a few days ago.

"He really has lost everything; he had to leave his family back in Syria because people wanted to kill him," The Telegraph quoted Bü as saying in translated remarks.

"Even though he doesn't have a lot, he goes on the street and distributes food to the homeless."
