Slovakia to oppose compulsory migrant quotas at EU meeting: PM

Slovakia`s Prime Minister Robert Fico said his government will oppose EU plans for compulsory migrant quotas at an emergency meeting in Brussels on Monday.

Bratislava: Slovakia`s Prime Minister Robert Fico said his government will oppose EU plans for compulsory migrant quotas at an emergency meeting in Brussels on Monday.

"If quotas are approved, we will take a substantial and clear position. We will do everything we can to convince Europe that quotas are nonsense," he said in a television broadcast on Sunday.

He said Interior Minister Robert Kalinak would aim to block the European Commission`s plan involving a quota system to distribute 160,000 refugees across the 28-member EU.

Fico said that imposing quotas -- a move also opposed by the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland -- "would be a violation of the basic decision-making rules of the European Union".
