Strong earthquake hits Myanmar; tremors felt in Northeast, West Bengal, Bihar, Delhi

The magnitude-6.9 quake struck at a depth of 135 kilometers, 396 kilometers north of Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, according to the US Geological Survey.

Kolkata: A strong earthquake struck Myanmar on Wednesday and was felt in parts of eastern India and Bangladesh.

Its tremors were felt in the Northeast, West Bengal and Bihar.

Tremors were also felt in Delhi and NCR.

Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, as well, felt the quake.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.9 and it struck at a depth of 135 kilometers, 396 kilometers north of Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw.

According to National Centre of Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7:25 PM.

The quake was centered in the jungle and hills around 220 kilometers northwest of Mandalay, Myanmar's second-biggest city.

While the area is prone to earthquakes, it is generally sparsely populated, and most houses are low-rise structures.

Since the area is remote and the quake happened at night, a full assessment of the situation was not expected before tomorrow morning, as per PTI. 

Meanwhile, NDRF said that no report of loss of lives in Sikkim, Siliguri and Kolkata was reported.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to CMs of Assam and Manipur regarding earthquake in the region, as per PMO.

In a related development, Kamrup (metro) district administration has requested people to inform any kind of damage at - 7399003002,7399003003,1077, 03612733052.

Just few days back, on April 10, a powerful earthquake clocking 6.8 on the Richter scale, had epicentred in Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan and had jolted several parts of North India, including the Delhi NCR region.

However, there were no reports of loss of lives or property then.

Tremors were also felt then in Pakistan and large parts of North India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, besides Delhi National Capital Region.
