Lucknow: Development seems to be finally knocking the doors of villagers residing in the remotest corners of the country. Sheetal Khera Village – a village in close proximity of Lucknow – finally got electricity after 68 years of Independence.
According to a report in The Times of India, electricity was brought to Sheetal Khera Village after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's had referred to this rural electrification drive at a function in Delhi on Friday.
The village – located just 20 km from Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow – has nearly 40 houses which have no electricity and the residents used earthen lamps everyday till now.
"There are so many villages where such works have been done but they never got electricity. That way we are lucky,'' said TOI quoted Janki Ram, one of the residents.
The electricity transformer was inaugurated by local MLA Chandra Rawat by switching a bulb at Mata Prasad's residence in Sheetlakhera about two months back.
There are around 10,000 villages in UP which are yet to be lit up. The Samajwadi Party government has assured the citizens that power supply in rural areas will be increased by the end of 2016.
The state will go to polls next year.
