Myanmar President visits Taj Mahal

Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw on Sunday visited the Taj Mahal on the second leg of his four-day trip to India.

Agra: Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw on Sunday visited the Taj Mahal on the second leg of his four-day trip to India.

"A place we have wanted to visit. At last our wishes have come true. Indeed a testimony to India's quality of art and greatness," the President wrote in the visitor's book.

The President stayed at the Taj for around an hour, according to Munazzar Ali, caretaker of the 17th century memorial.

"We thank you so much for the time and effort which has gone into making this visit a success. It really deserves to be one of the wonders of the world," he added in his message.

U Htin Kyaw arrived in Agra earlier in the day after visiting Bodh Gaya in Bihar on Saturday where he offered prayers at the Mahabodhi temple.

The Myanmarese President is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday.

He is accompanied by his wife and a 31-member Myanmarese delegation, comprising five ministers, government officials and family members.

This is the first presidential visit from Myanmar after Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy assumed power in March.
