AMU professor dies after waiting for ambulance for six hours

Professor D Murthy, the chairman of AMU's Department of Modern Indian Languages, was a cancer patient.

Aligarh: In a tragic incident, a 64-year-old senior Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor, Tuesday, died waiting for an ambulance for more than six hours.

Professor D Murthy, the chairman of AMU's Department of Modern Indian Languages, was a cancer patient. His condition deteriorated after a surgery on Sunday. Doctors at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) then advised that Murthy, who was on a ventilator, be shifted to Delhi.

NDTV has cited hospital officials as alleging that an ambulance could not be arranged in time due to paperwork.

"An ambulance wasn't available. There was no coordination within the hospital. What was the need to fill up the form?" the channel quoted the university's spokesperson S Peerzada as saying.

However, Mohammad Aslam, the chairman of the Surgery department of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in the university, said: "Even after we referred him to Delhi, an ambulance was not available for hours".

The AMU teachers have alleged negligence.

Meanwhile, AMU vice-chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd) told The Times of India that he had constituted a three-member panel to probe the matter.

He further vowed necessary action against the guilty.

Notably, in September, five JNMC doctors were booked for negligence after a student died of dengue while being treated at the hospital.
