'Amma Nadu': J Jayalalithaa defeats incumbency, all set to become first Tamil Nadu CM to get re-elected in 30 years

Chennai: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalithaa on Thursday proved pollsters wrong with a stunning performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2016, votes for which are still being counted.

The performance is 'stunning' because no incumbent chief minister has managed to get re-elected in the southern state in the last 30 years.

The state has had alternate AIADMK and DMK governments over the last three decades.

As per the trends/results available from the Election Commission of India, the AIADMK is leading in 123 seats while the DMK-Congress alliance is ahead in 79 seats.

All other parties are way behind and have not even touched the double-digit mark in trends.

The total number of seats in the state stands at 234 – voting was held for 232 seats on May 16 and postponed for two constituencies, which will now go to polls on May 23.

As per EC, the AIADMK has earned a vote share of 41.7 percent as of 10.50 am. The DMK, on the other hand, had a vote share of 30.3 percent while the Congress was third with 6.7 percent.

The results also has a message for the DMK and its heir apparent MK Stalin – that the state is still not ready to acccept him as a leader, especially in the shadow of his father M Karunanidhi.
