Supermoon total lunar eclipse: Five things to know

New Delhi: The rare supermoon lunar eclipse occured on Sunday night, September 27, has been witnessed by many skywatchers around the world.

What is a Supermoon total lunar eclipse?

Supermoon total lunar eclipse is a phenomenon when a full moon is at its closest point to Earth. At this point of time, the moon will look up to 14 per cent larger and 30 times brighter than usual.

This is combined with a lunar eclipse, which is when the moon passes behind the Earth into its shadow.

Here are five things you need to know about it:

1. It is the first first supermoon eclipse in 30 years since 1982 and next won’t happen until 2033.
2. It occurs when a full moon makes its closest approach to Earth, approximately 385,000 kilometres away. Supermoons appear up to 14 per cent larger than usual due to proximity.
3. Moon will be at its closest orbital point to Earth, called perigee, while also in its brightest phase.
4. Sunday's supermoon lunar eclipse lasted for 1 hour and 11 minutes.
5. As per experts, there is no danger in watching a supermoon total lunar eclipse with the naked eye unlike a solar eclipse.
