New Delhi: The US space agency NASA, recently released a beautiful view of the red planet, Mars covered with frosted sand dunes.
The image was captured on March 27, 2016, at 15:31 local Mars time by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
The view shows a terrain resembling a wavy sheet of partially rusted metal. These dunes are getting enough sunlight to start defrosting their seasonal cover of carbon dioxide as it is late winter in the southern hemisphere of Mars. When some of the pressurized gas gets released, visible spots form.
The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates HiRISE, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.
