Amritsar: In a noble initiative, the Golden Temple community kitchen now serves organic langar to pilgrims.

More than one lakh devotees partake in community service at the shrine, which gets only a 10-quintal supply every three-to-four days, reports the Hindustan Times.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), however, plans to increase the quantity of naturally grown veggies by motivating other gurdwaras to adopt similar sort of programme and grow organic food on their land.

SGPC additional secretary Daljit Bedi told the daily, "In January, we started serving organic carrot, radish, spinach, and cabbage as part of langar. The purpose is to serve devotees food that is chemical-free."

The vegetables for the organic langar are produced on the 7-acre SGPC farm attached with Gurdwara Gurusar Satlani Sahib, where the first seeds were sown one-and-a-half-year back.

The committee has also started growing wheat and fruits at Satlani Sahib for the organic langar.
