New Delhi: Internet search giant Google on Monday celebrated the 90th birthday of Indian cartoonist Mario Miranda with an illustrative doodle on its homepage.
Miranda, who was born on 2 May 1926, in Daman, then in Portuguese India, to Goan Catholic parents, had been a regular with The Times of India and other newspapers in Mumbai, including The Economic Times. However, he got his popularity with his works published in The Illustrated Weekly of India.
“We’re pleased today to honor the legacy of Mario Miranda. His works live on throughout India, and we’re proud to provide another space for this artist’s surging style to rest,” Google wrote in a blog post.
Usually inspired by the bustling cityscape of Mumbai, Miranda’s works often feature complex, multi-layered scenes.
Miranda was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2012.
On 11 December 2011, he died of natural causes at his home in Loutolim.
