Mumbai: Thousands of suburban rail commuters on Tuesday had a harrowing time after four coaches of a local train derailed in a second such incident in as many days.
No casualty was reported in the derailment today which led to disruption of traffic on the busy route linking Churchgate in South Mumbai to Virar, said Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Western Railway, Sharat Chandrayan.
A train coming from Borivili and going towards Churchgate derailed at around 11 A.M. Between Andheri and Vile Parle stations.
As a result, the long-distance 19012 Gujarat Express, 19216 Saurashtra Express and 19024 FZR-BCT Janta Express trains were terminated at Borivali station.
Seeking to ease the rush, state-run BEST operated extra buses between Churchgate and Andheri during evening peak hours.
As the derailment had occurred between Andheri and Vile Parle, some of Western Railway's long-distance trains had to be rescheduled.
The down trains (fast line towards Virar) were expected to be operational by 6 P.M.
Earlier, a team of engineers and rescue officials had rushed to the spot to restore the services following the derailment, the CPRO said, adding that an inquiry will be held to ascertain the cause behind the incident, which saw suburban train services on the busy route being badly affected.
A local train coming from Bandra had last evening derailed on the Harbour Line of Central Railway while entering Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), leading to a disruption in train services which had lasted several hours.
