Kochhi: Making fun of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's much-publicised campaign for building toilets all our the country, veteran Left leader VS Achuthanandan has said that there is no need for a toilet when there is nothing to eat.
In an interview to a TV news channel, the 93-year-old Left veteran said, "If you don't eat, you have no use for a toilet".
Achuthanandan, who is contender for next Chief Minister of Kerala, also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Clean India Mission which focuses on modernizing nation and building much-needed bathrooms.
"He keeps singing shauchalayam, shauchalayam, shauchalayam to every Indian. But when there's nothing to eat, how can they use the toilets?" Achuthanandan was quoted as saying by the news channel.
Achuthanandan's stark criticism of PM has added fuel to a high-voltage election campaign by BJP and the Left aimed at wresting control of Kerala.
The BJP's strategy to leverage its campaign on PM's shoulder has backfired in Kerala with Modi being trolled on Twitter for likening Kerala to Somalia for the infant mortality rate or the number of newborns who do not survive.
Though Achuthanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan are leading the Left campaign, neither of the two has has been declared presumptive Chief Minister.
