Srinagar: Separatist Yasin Malik was detained on Friday after he tried to carry out a protest march in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader, along with his supporters, started a protest march from Maisuma area to Lal Chowk after Friday prayers when police stopped them and took Malik and his core supporters into preventive custody.

Sources in the JKLF said the march was intended to mount pressure on the government to release political prisoners in Kashmir.

Malik was taken to police station Kothi Bagh.
