When Narendra Modi told Pak PM Nawaz Sharif - 'What has war yielded, neither land nor heaven'

Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised many in India and Pakistan when he landed in Lahore on December 25 to wish Nawaz Sharif on his 66th birthday.

Modi's visit, though short, was full of bonhomie between the two PMs.

And during his visit, PM Modi apparently told Sharif - "jung bahut karli. Jung karke kya paya, na zameen mili na jannat paya (What has war yielded, neither land nor heaven)."

As per a report in First Post, Pakistani PM's brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also present at Raiwind palace when Modi uttered these words.

The report said that PM Modi's views was greatly appreciated in the Sharif household.

Agreeing with PM Modi, Sharif brothers supposedly told him - 'Well said'.

PM Modi's 150-minute visit to Lahore made headlines across the world. He held talks with his Pakistani counterpart during which they decided to open ways for peace for the 'larger good' of the people of the two countries.

Modi spent spent about 80 minutes at Sharif's palatial residence of Jati Umra Raiwind during which the PM greeted his family members at the marriage function of Pakistani PM's grand-daughter Mehrun Nisa (who is daughter of Mariam Nawaz Sharif).

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and other Indian officials were also present.

India's External Affairs Ministry Spokesman said the visit and the talks were aimed at infusing a 'positive spirit' in the neighborhood.

Pakistan described Modi's stopover here as a 'goodwill visit' and said the two leaders discussed about the comprehensive dialogue which the two countries have recently decided to start.

"The two leaders decided to take forward the dialogue process. It was agreed that foreign secretaries will meet in Islamabad next month," Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chowdhury.

Chowdhury said the two premiers agreed to 'open ways for peace and better atmosphere', while understanding each other's concerns.

After coming back from Pakistan Modi had tweeted:
