Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns from Rajya Sabha, to join AAP?

New Delhi: In a big blow to the BJP, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, Monday, resigned from the Rajya Sabha amid indications that he may quit the BJP and join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Reports said Sidhu may be anointed as chief ministerial as AAP's CM candidate for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab.

Sidhu, a three-time BJP Lok Sabha member from Amritsar, had made way for Arun Jaitley in the 2014 polls. He was sent to the Rajya Sabha as a nominated member after his wife complained of him being sidelined by the party.

Interestingly, Sidhu's name figures in the core group created by the BJP to steer the party to victory in the upcoming polls.

Sidhu has a long-standing feud with the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership and he may have seen it as a hindrance to his political ambitions.

The AAP has also been sending feelers to Sidhu in the run up to the crucial polls. Party chief Arvind Kejriwal had last year said that Sidhu is welcome to join the Aam Aadmi Party.
