'Lost' Saraswati river all set to come alive this month

Chandigarh: The 'lost' Saraswati 'river' is all set to come back alive later this month.

As per a report, the government of Haryana is preparing to release water into what is widely believed to be the route of the Vedic era river.

Preparations for the same are afoot, The Indian Express reported on Thursday.

The report said the Saraswati Heritage Development Board (SHDB) has already approved a proposal as part of which water would be discharged into the river route from Uncha Chandana village on July 30 through the Dadupur feeder.

At present, cleaning work is underway at the Dadupur feeder.

The water is expected to flow through Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts.

Once the river starts flowing, it is expected to be augmented by the Monsoon.

As for the long-term plan, the government is planning to build a dam at Adi Badri, where the 'lost' river is believed to have originated.

In the words of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, efforts to bring the now-lost Saraswati river to life was aimed at keeping “alive the soul of a community”.

A committee set up by the Central government and led by former Kumaon University vice-chancellor Prof KS Valdiya is already verifying Haryana’s claims of discovery of the Vedic era river.
