Kiran Bedi explains how we can prevent celebratory firings

New Delhi: In the wake of a death of a teenager after she was injured in celebratory firing at a wedding function, former top cop Kiran Bedi explains how such incidents can be prevented:

- Such incidents reflect a lawless culture

- Stricter and harsher punishment required for those who indulge in such activities

- Celebratory firings happen repeatedly as the awareness is very low

 

- No existing method of prevention in place

- Systems like community policing and neighbourhood watch groups needed

- Accused in such cases must be sent to jail and must also be told to pay adequate compensation to the victim or the victim`s kin

- Punishment must go beyond arrest, investigation and challan
