New Delhi: The father of Umar Khalid, one of the prime accused in the “anti-India” protests in Jawaharlal Nehru University, has said that his son will surrender if Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh guarantees his safety.

Umar Khalid has been absconding since past eight days following the incident in the JNU campus. His whereabouts are not known.

His father has claimed that his son's life is under threat.

“If the home minister come forward and ensures his security, then we would also appeal to him (Umar Khalid) to surrender,” his father said.

“I have full faith in the judiciary, but the kind of atmosphere that has been created, even the courts are also not safe.

“There is attack on journalist as well. Those who are lawyers and vowed to work for the law are themselves involved in hooliganism and goondaism.

“They themselves are attacking people. So in this atmosphere, who has fear for his life, why he will come and surrender?” asked his father.

“You create a safe atmosphere first. Our home minister should promise full security to him and there will be justice, only then he will surrender,” he added.

Umar Khalid is one of the 20 accused involved in the JNU incident and police have been looking for him. His name was mentioned in posters as one of the organisers of the “anti-India protests” at JNU campus.
