Tribal health care discussed at special workshop

New Delhi: Malaria, maternal mortality and fluorosis are some of the diseases which were discussed at a special workshop on tribal health issues in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, an official statement said here on Thursday.

The workshop saw over 50 representatives from 24 organizations in academia, government and civil society present programmes that they have been running to address problems plaguing tribal health care.

The three-day workshop was organized by the union health and family welfare ministry at Shodhgram in the tribal majority Gadchiroli, the statement said.

"This workshop marks an important step towards integrating evidence from the field into policy making for tribal health care. It also presents a unique opportunity for government departments, Indian Council of Medical Research and voluntary agencies to share experiences and learn from each other," said Soumya Swaminathan, secretary, department of Health Research and director general, Indian Council for Medical Research.

Best practices on tribal health were selected from the 85 entries received by the Expert Group on Tribal Health.
