New Delhi: Delhi had barely washed its hands off the deadly disease of dengue, now reports of another species of mosquitoes infesting the city has started doing the rounds.
These mosquitoes, however, are not harmful, if reports are to be believed. They are called Culex mosquitoes and are the kinds that don't cause dengue or malaria.
Culex is a vector for a group of diseases that can be transmitted to humans. This includes filariasis and encephalitis that have a low prevalence in the capital.
These mosquitoes are gradually becoming a menace and residents of the city are dreading the monsoons, which is the time when the mosquito population goes up in numbers.
Times of India quoted K Raghvendra, scientist, National Institute of Malaria Research, who said that, “We need to close the source of breeding, which is clogged drains, for long-term effect. Fogging is a temporary intervention, best used when there is a health crisis.”
