Gujarat has most diabetics in India: Report

Over a quarter of India's diabetics, which number at least 559,718 though data from several states was not available, are in the state of Gujarat which has the highest number at 161,578.

New Delhi: Over a quarter of India's diabetics, which number at least 559,718 though data from several states was not available, are in the state of Gujarat which has the highest number at 161,578.

As of March 2015, Rajasthan has 67,738 cases, Punjab 32,100, West Bengal 11,908 and Jharkhand 17,240, according to the National Health Profile 2015, released by Health Minister J.P. Nadda here on Tuesday.

Gujarat also has the highest burden of hypertension with 159,150 cases reported as on March this year out of a total number of 715, 382, working out to about 22 percent. Maharashtra had 96,278 cases, Punjab 38,273 and Rajasthan 61,792.

Figures from these two diseases were not available for many states including Delhi and Manipur.

India has also shown an increase in cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). As per the report by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, nearly 3,000 people have died due to ARI in 2014. The data showed that 34,814,636 cases of respiratory disease were reported in 2014, out of which 16,790,438 were females while the total number of deaths were 2,932.

The number of deaths due to ARI in 2013 was much higher as it stood at 3,513. The number of reported ARI cases in 2013 were 33,423,107. In Delhi, 390,170 cases were reported in 2013.
