World Water Day: Five clever ways to save water at home!

New Delhi: Water, the elixir of life, is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. With more than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water currently, the scenario is set to worsen if the water crisis in country is not met seriously.

Therefore, water conservation has become an essential practice in all regions, even in areas where water seems abundant. It is our responsibility to ensure that we use water as efficiently as possible because wherever we are, whoever we are, we rely on water.

When it comes to conservation, small adjustments can have a big impact. And the simple actions that you take today can help save a lot - because every drop counts!

Here are a few tips on saving water at home:

Check pipes for leaks: Remember a small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day and marger leaks mean hundreds of gallons.

Soak your dishes: You might have seen your mom doing this inorder to get tough grease or baked-on food off without having to scrub hard. But it's also a great way to save water. So, fill your vessel with water (up above half way) and put your soiled dishes in there for an hour before washing them.

Take shorter showers: Make sure that you turn off the shower while soaping up and then turn it back to rinse. Install low-flow showerheads can also help use less water than a regular showerhead.

Turn off the tap while you brush: You should not keep the tap running while brushing your teeth. Turn off after you wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing.

Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket: Every time you flush a facial tissue or a cigarette butt, you are wasting five to seven gallons of water.

World Water Day is being celebrated on March 22 annually. The day focuses attention on the importance of freshwater and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The theme for this year is “ Water and Jobs” ("Better water, better jobs") indicating the correlations between water and jobs created either directly or indirectly by water sources on the globe.
