New Delhi: A nearly 6.5-ft-long cobra was spotted inside Delhi Metro's Yamuna Bank Depot, sparking a clamour among the people.
It was at around 11 AM yesterday that one Jyoti found the reptile coiled in front of the entrance to an office complex inside the Yamuna Bank Depot.
She made a call to NGO Wildlife SOS, who then turned up to rescue the reptile.
"On reaching the spot we saw that the snake, terrified due to a crowd that had gathered around it, had slunk into the nearest hiding space that it could find. We rescued it and took it to our rescue centre for observation," said a member of the NGO.
The reptile was found to be healthy and will be released into its natural habitat shortly, the NGO said.
"Common cobras are venomous snakes, but will not attack a human being without provocation. Sometimes, the size of a reptile, coupled with the general misunderstanding about snakes, causes people to unnecessarily panic on spotting one," explained Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS.
Metro railway officials said that the low-lying area, which is located close to Yamuna river, has much to do with such sightings.
A cobra was found on the premises of the same Metro station last month as well.
