Delhi: Directorate of Education issued a circular on Tuesday to all heads of schools in Delhi to observe mandatory summer vacation with effect from May 11.

It was said that mandatory summer vacations were to be observed in view of the prevailing hot weather and prediction that the temperature was likely to rise further.

Yesterday, the national capital had witnessed the hottest day of the season as the mercury soared to 44 degrees Celsius, five notches above the season's average.

"It was hottest day of the season so far. Also, the temperature had not touched 44 in the first half of May at least in the last five years," a MeT Department official had said.

A moderate-intensity dust storm had also lashed the city towards the evening but had failed to provide any respite from the sweltering heat.

At Palam Observatory, the maximum temperature was recorded at 46.2 degrees.

The humidity level in the air had oscillated between 14 percent and 54 percent.
